Garden Design:
The
kitchen garden is a raised bed that was initially built in 1997, with
the wrought iron fence added in 2OO6. Included are vegetables, herbs and
raspberries. 100 yards of topsoil were used to shape our berm in 1998.
The garden entry is an arbor with climbing rose. A turtle on the path
greets our visitors. The pool, pergola and pool house were added in
2004. The wooded area behind the pool and pool house is currently being
naturalized with azalea and dogwood. All of the back gardens have a
plethora of perennials including lily of the valley, peonies, vinca
major, lamb ears, orchid frost, Jacobs ladder, mums, stella dora lilies,
Japanese iris, day lilies, Shasta daises, black eyed Susan, hosta (many
different varieties), bearded iris and columbine.

Landscaping or use of special effects:
The
garden is highlighted by a pergola, with a coffered ceiling of mahogany
lattice, and a chandelier containing six tea lights in Amish-style glass
holders that are protected from the wind. Indirect lighting is found
within the ceiling of the pergola, around the pool house and on east end
of the garden. The patio within the garden and surrounding the pool is
pressed concrete colored in the style of Altamont bluestone. The pool
house is topped by a cupola with a brass weathervane of a duck
positioned as though it is preparing to land in the pool. At the western
entry of the garden is a stone pillar topped with a pot of many faces,
which depending on the planting in a given season has different moods. A
stone walkway leads to the kitchen garden, which is watered by a copper
sprinkler containing wind chimes.
Interesting and/or Unusual Aspects of Our Garden:
The western garden entry is flanked by two weeping
cherry trees; one pink (Prusus serrulata) and one white (snow fountain;
Prunus snofozam).
Separating the kitchen garden from the grassy-pool
area is a weeping pine (miniature; Pinus strobes 'Pendula').
On the berm near the pool house is a weeping Norway
spruce (Picea abies) The north side of the garden and adjacent to the
house is a Japanese maple (Acer palmatum) and balancing it is a trio of
red barberry (Berberis thunbergii) In the center of the north side of
the garden is a wisteria (Wisteria sinensis). The highlight of the west
side of the garden is a red maple (Acer rubrum) In the back of the pool
house is a miniature flowering plum.
The
balance of the back and side gardens includes low bush blue spruce, mugo
pine, golden barberry, red barberry, sea green juniper, burning bush,
golden arbovitae, butterfly bush, low bush spruce, hydrangea, rose and
blue rug juniper.
In the front garden, the focal points are a flowering
plum (Prumus blireiana), a Colorado blue spruce (this one is more green)
and a beech (Fagus sylvatica). The front door is flanked by two spiral
juniper and accented with holly, red barberry and golden arbovitae. Pink
rhododendron complete the front.
