GARDEN

Garden Design:

The gardens are designed as rooms using multi-level beds with fossil rock as retaining walls. The front garden is designed to slope toward the street creating a full view for passersby. The shade side garden is a quiet, cool, wooded area with outside seating and a screened porch for bird watching in any weather. The backyard has a relaxed open design with a patio surrounding the in around pool and perimeter foliage, creating a lush privacy screen while concealing a 6 foot fence that keeps deer out.

Plants:

We have an American Chestnut tree, Japanese Maples, Dutchman's pipe, climbing and bush hydrangea, curly willows, ornamental grasses, dogwoods and lilacs, dwarf evergreens, various lilies, hostas, astilbes, ferns, roses, fruit trees, grapes and berry bushes.

Interesting and unusual aspects of the garden:

The far end of the pool has a large waterfall made of the same stone as the raised beds that surround the yard. Low voltage lighting and an outdoor sound system add interesting elements to the area. A bluestone sidewalk was added to connect the driveway to the front of the house.

This is our third full year at the residence and we have made many changes to the gardens while being sensitive to the original 1930's design of the house. We were able to keep many of the original plantings and with care rejuvenate them. Many of our family, friends and neighbors have shared their labor and perennials, which have enriched our gardens.
